MAL-Code

Persons who work with products covered by the Danish Executive Order on Work with Code-numbered Products are bound to determine a code number (a MAL code) as stipulated in the Danish Executive Order on the Determination of Code Numbers. This executive order is a Danish special rule.

All of the following kinds of products, if used for professional purposes, are subject to the rule:
  • Paints, car varnish, similar paint-like coatings
  • Glues (adhesives), including organic solvents used for jointing,
    a) in construction works
    b) in the car trade, for bodywork and aircraft parts
  • Fillers, including joint sealing, sealing compounds and putty,
    a) for construction purposes
    b) in the car trade, for bodywork and aircraft parts
  • Printing inks, serigraphic inks and other products used in graphic printing processes
  • Thinners used for the above-mentioned products
  • Products used for the preparation and completion of work with the above-mentioned products, e.g. degreasers, detergents and paint removers

A code number consists of two figures separated by a hyphen – e.g. MAL code (1993): 3 – 5.The number before the hyphen indicates the safety measures that need to be taken against inhaling vapours from the product's content of volatile matters, e.g. organic solvents.

The number after the hyphen in the code number indicates the safety measures to be taken when, for instance, there is a risk that skin and eyes come into direct contact with the product.

The code number must appear on the packaging, in the material safety data sheet and in the workplace safety instructions.
